• Dojo Etiquette

  • Follow the Dojo Kun
  • Show proper respect for other students at all times
  • Bow to Shomen when entering and leaving the Dojo
  • Bow to Sensei or any black belt known to be higher rank than Sensei - When in doubt, bow
  • During opening and closing ceremonies - silence
  • While waiting for your class to begin - keep the noise down
  • No talking during class
  • No gum
  • No jewelry
  • Keep your fingernails and toenails trimmed
  • Keep your uniform clean
  • Keep long hair tied back
  • Be on time - tardiness is a sign of disrespect
  • Do not leave practice without the permission of the instructor
  • No profanity - in any language

• Dojo Kun

  The Dojo Kun is a list of 5 school rules that are recited at the end of each class.

  Seek Perfection of Character
  Hitotsu, jinkaku kansei ni tsutomeru koto

  Be Faithful
  Hitotsu, makoto no michi wo mamoru koto

  Endeavor
  Hitotsu, doryoko no seishin wo yashinau koto

  Respect Others
  Hitotsu, reigi wo omonzuro koto

  Refrain from Violent Deeds
  Hitotsu, kekki no yu wo imashimeru koto

• Niju Kun

  Master Funakoshi wrote the twenty guiding principals of Karate-do to help students transform their art into a way of life.

  • Karate begins and ends with a bow.
  • In karate, never attack first.
  • One who practices karate must follow the way of justice.
  • First you must know yourself. Then you can know others.
  • Spiritual development is paramount; technical skills are merely means to the end.
  • Always be ready to release your mind.
  • Misfortunes arise out of lazyness.
  • Don’t think that what you learn from karate can’t be used outside the dojo.
  • It will take your entire life to learn karate.
  • Put karate into your everyday living.
  • Karate is like hot water; if you do not heat it constantly, it will again become cool water.
  • Do not think about winning; think rather that you do not have to lose.
  • Victory depends on your ability to distinguish vulnerable points from invulnerable ones.
  • The secret of combat resides in the art of directing it (clever fighting, trying every strategy).
  • Think of the hands and feet as swords.
  • When you leave home, think that you have numerous opponents waiting for you.
  • Beginners must master basic stances; natural body positions are for the advanced.
  • Practicing karate correctly is one thing; engaging in a real fight is another.
  • Do not forget to correctly apply:
    • Strength and weakness of power
    • Expansion and contraction of the body
    • Slowness and speed of techniques
  • Devise at all times. (Always think and devise ways to live the Precepts every day.)
